Manchester Small Group Workshop

Looking for a Manchester photography workshop where you can learn in a relaxed, practical environment without being part of a large group?

My small group photography workshops in Manchester are limited to a maximum of just 5 photographers, giving you plenty of time for individual tuition, questions and hands-on guidance throughout the day.

This is a practical 5-hour photography workshop in Manchester city centre, designed to help you understand your camera, improve your photography and become more confident creating your own images.

Whether you’re a complete beginner wanting to move beyond Auto mode or an experienced photographer looking to improve your technique, you’ll learn by actually photographing Manchester rather than sitting in a classroom.

What Makes This Manchester Photography Workshop Different?

Small groups mean you get the benefits of expert tuition without the cost of a private 1-to-1 photography lesson.

With a maximum of five photographers, I can spend time with each person individually, answer your questions and adapt the workshop to your experience, camera and photography goals.

Maximum 5 Photographers

Small groups mean more personal attention, more opportunities to ask questions and more time receiving individual guidance throughout the workshop.

5 Hours of Hands-On Tuition

You’ll spend the workshop photographing Manchester and putting the techniques you learn into practice, with practical guidance and support throughout the session

A Manchester Photography Workshop for Beginners

If you’re new to photography, this workshop is a great way to build your confidence and learn how to take control of your camera.

I’ll explain the fundamentals in straightforward language and show you how to move beyond Auto mode. You’ll learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together and, most importantly, when and why you should change them.

You don’t need to understand all the technical terminology before you arrive. That’s what the workshop is for.

For Intermediate and Advanced Photographers

The workshop isn’t just for beginners.

If you’re already comfortable using your camera, we can concentrate more on composition, creative use of light, advanced camera settings, long exposures and finding new ways to approach Manchester’s architecture and cityscape.

You can also use the workshop to ask questions about areas of photography you’re struggling with and receive individual feedback while you’re shooting.

Photograph Manchester's Best Locations

Manchester provides an incredible variety of photographic opportunities, from historic canals and industrial architecture to modern buildings and busy city streets.

Depending on the day, weather and interests of the group, locations may include:

  • Castlefield
  • Deansgate
  • St Peter’s Square
  • Manchester city centre
  • Northern Quarter
  • Piccadilly
  • Other locations and hidden photographic spots

The exact route isn’t fixed because photography is all about working with the conditions. I’ll choose locations that give us the best opportunities to create interesting images on the day.

What You'll Photograph

Throughout the workshop we’ll look at different approaches to photographing Manchester and creating stronger, more interesting images.

  • Manchester architecture
  • Cityscapes
  • Historic buildings
  • Canals and industrial heritage
  • Urban scenes
  • Leading lines and perspective
  • Movement and light
  • Long exposures
  • Details and alternative compositions

You’ll learn how to look at familiar locations differently and find photographs rather than simply taking snapshots.

Why Choose a Small Group Photography Workshop

A small group gives you a great balance between personal tuition and the social experience of learning with other photographers.

You can learn from the questions other people ask, see how they approach the same scene and share ideas, while still receiving plenty of individual attention.

With only five photographers maximum, the workshop doesn’t feel like a large photography course. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to work directly with me throughout the session.

A tripod can be useful if you’d like to practise long exposure photography. If you don’t have one, contact me before the workshop to discuss the options.

How Much Walking is Involved

The workshop takes place around Manchester city centre, so there will be some walking between locations.

The pace is relaxed, with regular stops to photograph, discuss techniques and review what you’re doing.

You don’t need a high level of fitness, but comfortable footwear is recommended.

If you have any concerns about walking or accessibility, please contact me before booking so we can discuss your requirements.

Learn From an Award Winning Photographer

Your workshop is led by Mike McMahon of Sky High Photography UK.

Mike is an award-winning photographer with a passion for Manchester photography and helping photographers improve their skills and confidence.

The aim isn’t simply to show you how to change your camera settings. It’s to help you understand why you’re changing them and give you the confidence to make your own creative decisions.
